How does Express Entry work?
Express Entry is an online system introduced by the Canadian government in 2015 which is used to manage Canadian permanent residency applications under three federal economic immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades and Canadian Experience Class.To qualify for the express entry pool, potential candidates must meet the criteria of at least one of these three programs.
Federal Skilled Worker Program(FSWP):Skilled workersare people withskilledprofessional work experience who are chosen as permanent residents based on their ability to contribute to the Canadian economy.
  • The 100-pointFSWP selection gridassesses applicants against six main criteria. To pass, candidates need 67 points or more.
  • Education:Candidate must have a Canadian secondary (high school) or post-secondary certificate, diploma/ degree or a completed foreign credential and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from an agency approved by CIC.
Language ability:Candidate must meet the minimum level of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens(NCLC) 7 in Frenchfor the first official language in all four language abilities.If candidates want to score points for the second official language , candidate must meet the minimum level of CLB 5 in all four language abilities.
Experience:Candidates should have at least 1 year continuous full time or an equal amount in part time, it should be paid, it should be within last 10 years, should be in the same NOC skill type (0,A or B).
Comprehensive Ranking System formula
The points you get from the CRS include a core set of points up to 600 and a set of additional points of up to600. Your total score will be out of 1,200. It is based on the four parts of the CRS formula:
Core:Upto600points
1.Skills and experience factors
2.Spouse or common-law partner factors, such as their language skills and education
3.Skills transferability, including education and work experience
4.Additional:Upto600pointsfor:
  • Canadian degrees, diplomas or certificates
  • a valid job offer
  • a nomination from a province or territory
  • a brother or sister living in Canada who is a citizen or permanent resident
  • strong French language skills

Federal Skilled TradesProgram (FSTP)

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade.

Minimum requirements

To be eligible, you must:

  • plan to live outside the province of Quebec.
  • meet therequiredlevelsinEnglishorFrenchfor each language ability
  • have at least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience)in a skilled trade within the five years before you apply,
  • meet the job requirements for that skilled trade as set out in the National Occupational Classification (NOC), except for needing a certificate of qualification, and
  • have anofferoffull-timeemploymentfor a total period of at least one yearora certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.

Education

There is no education requirement for the Federal Skilled Trades Program. But, if you want to earn points for your education under Express Entry, you either need:

  • a Canadian post-secondarycertificate, diploma or degree

OR

  • a completed foreigncredential, and
  • anEducational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from an agency approved by CIC.

Languageability

You must:

  • meet the minimum language levelof Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 for speaking and listening, and Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 for reading and writing, and
  • take a language testapproved by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) that shows you meet the level for speaking, listening, reading and writing.

You must show that you meet therequirements in English or Frenchby including thetest resultswhen you complete your Express Entry profile. Your test results must not be morethan two years oldon the day you apply for permanent residence.

Skilled work experience

Skilled Trades currently eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades Program are organized under these major and minor groups of the NOC:
  • Major Group 72, industrial, electrical and construction trades,
  • Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades,
  • Major Group 82, supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production,
  • Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators,
  • Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks, and
  • Minor Group 633, butchers and bakers.These major NOC groups are subdivided into different occupations. (All are NOC skill type B.)

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class is for skilled workers who have Canadian work experience and want to become permanent residents.

Requirements

  • You must Plan to live outside the province of Quebec.
  • Education:There is no education requirement for the FSTP/CEC. But, if candidate want to earn points under Express Entry, candidate must have a Canadian secondary (high school) or post-secondary certificate, diploma/ degree or a completed foreign credential and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from an agency approved by CIC.
  • Languageability:If your skilled work experience in Canada is in a NOC 0 or A job, the minimum level isCLB 7 (English)orNCLC 7 (French) and If your skilled work experience in Canada is in a NOC B job, the minimum level isCLB 5 (English)orNCLC 5 (French).
  • Experience:Candidate must have at least 1 year (or the equivalent in part time) skilled work experience in Canada with the proper authorization in the 3 years before application date.
  • Option for International Students:For many international graduates, the Canadian Experience Class offersthefastest andeasy pathto achieve permanent residence.After completing a program or course of study at a Canadianeducational institution, manyinternational graduates are able toremain inthe countryon post-graduate work permits.If, during this time, agraduate obtains at least one year of work experience, they may then become eligible to enter the Express Entry poolunder the Canadian Experience Class.
